Federated Computer empowers businesses with self-hosted, privacy-focused tools to enhance productivity and profitability. One of the key components of our suite is Gitea—a powerful, open-source alternative to GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket.

## Why Choose Gitea Over GitHub?

While GitHub Copilot, GitHub Desktop, GitHub Actions, and GitHub Enterprise dominate the market, they come with limitations:

- **Vendor lock-in** (your data lives on GitHub's servers)
- **High costs** (especially for enterprise GitHub plans)
- **Limited customization** (GitHub API has restrictions)

Gitea solves these problems by offering:

- **Self-hosted Git repositories** (full control over your code)
- **Lightweight & fast** (runs on low-resource devices, even a Raspberry Pi)
- **Built-in CI/CD** (similar to GitHub Actions)
- **No pricing tiers** (unlike GitHub pricing, which scales per user)
- **Open-source & customizable** (MIT licensed, unlike proprietary GitHub features)

## Gitea vs. GitHub vs. GitLab

| Feature | Gitea | GitHub | GitLab |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosting | Self-Hosted | Cloud | Both |
| Open-Source | ✔ (MIT) | ❌ Partial | ✔ Yes |
| CI/CD | ✔ Gitea Actions | ✔ GitHub Actions | ✔ GitLab CI/CD |
| System Resources | Low | High (cloud-based) | High |
| Customization | ✔ High | ❌ Limited | ✔ High |
| Pricing | Free | Paid Tiers | Free + Enterprise |

Gitea is ideal for businesses that need:

- **Private repositories** without GitHub's paywall
- **Internal DevOps workflows** (like GitHub Enterprise but self-hosted)
- **Seamless migration** from GitHub for Windows or GitHub Desktop

## How Federated Computer Enhances Gitea

At Federated Computer, we bundle Gitea with other self-hosted productivity tools to help businesses:

- **Reduce SaaS costs** (avoid GitHub pricing and vendor lock-in)
- **Improve security** (host code internally, no reliance on GitHub API)
- **Boost efficiency** (integrate with internal CI/CD, like GitHub Actions alternatives)
